Journey to Lima


A very early morning flight with 2 connections. All airports and flights very busy, but luckily the only slight delay was the departure of the Houston to Lima flight.
Karen and I met up at the Polaris Lounge in Houston Airport. Our Business Class flight from Houston to Lima was wonderful, and felt very short! Although our flight left Houston an hour late we were almost on time arriving in Lima. The Lima airport was quite busy, and long lines for Immigration, but they moved fast. Our luggage arrived quickly, and our driver was waiting, so all very smooth.
Not much traffic at midnight, so a good time to arrive. About a 45 minute drive to our hotel.
The Antigua Miraflores is a colonial style 3 star hotel, simple but charming.
Close to 2am before we finally get to bed.

Puno to Lima and farewell dinner

We had a nice relaxed morning, breakfast at 8:00am, a little walk along the pedestrian shopping street, repack and ready to leave at 10:20am. Puno's streets always seem to be busy, and they are quite narrow so we need to walk a few blocks to where our bus can pick us up. Staff from the hotel take the luggage. It's about an hour drive to Juliaca airport which is fairly small. Luckily Karen has a pass for the lounge so we have a comfortable wait. 1 and 1/2 hour flight to Lima, then about an hour drive to our hotel. So nice coming back to the Antiqua Miraflores. Karen and I go for a walk to get money from the ATM. Because this is the 1st of the month, long lines everywhere. All of the banks charge outrageous fees for withdrawal, 20 soles to take out 200! Much better to pay by by credit card if you can. Our group goes out for our farewell dinner to a lovely restaurant called Panchita about a 15 min walk from the hotel. Cuzco to Puno

Today we had a long drive (almost 400km) from the valley of Cuzco south through the Altiplano to the city of Puno on lake Titicaca. We were up at 6:30am and down for breakfast, finished packing, checked out and on to the bus at 8:00am. Our hotel in Cuzco, the Taypikala is on a very narrow street, so buses can't come to the door. We walk down a 1/2 block to a bigger street, and our luggage is brought down for us. It takes a while to get out of Cuzco, as it is quite spread out. We are taking the Interoceanic highway, which connects Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. The route first takes us along a river valley, and is quite winding.This is an agricultural area, with lots of potato fields and livestock. Andreas points out some corrals on the hillsides. The sheep, llamas etc are put in these at night so the pumas won't attack them as they would if they were spread out. Machu Picchu

What a day! It was wonderful last night to have a good sleep in a comfortable bed. We are up at 5am and have a light breakfast, packing a cheese/tomato/avocado sandwich to go. A few minutes walk down to the Machu Picchu bus stop. There is already a long lineup for the 7am bus, but we have tickets for the 6am bus and just walk on. The bus takes about 1/2 hour up the many switch-backed, steep narrow road. I can't imagine it in the rain. We have a last toilet stop at the gate before we go in. (no toilets at Machu Picchu)A very short line-up to get in. Then as you go through the gate and start climbing up you start to see the amazing views. We take a group photo at one of the view points, then Maren and I head for the Sun Gate while the others go to the Inca bridge. The trail to the Sun Gate is all up, some steps and some stone pavements, not too steep. Quite a few groups coming down from doing the Inca trail.
